500+ Google Reviews: What Melbourne Homeowners Really Value in a Carpet Cleaner

Sep 3
3 min read

We recently reached a milestone at Radius Carpet & Tile Cleaning that I'm incredibly proud of:

More than 500 Google reviews.

For a local family-owned business, that's a pretty significant number.

But I've been thinking about it a little differently.

Every review represents someone who trusted us enough to invite us into their home or business, allowed us to work on something they value, and then took time out of their day to tell others about their experience.

So rather than simply saying “Thank you for 500 reviews,” I thought I'd share some of what those customers have taught us along the way.

Great Carpet Cleaning Is About More Than Equipment

Professional equipment absolutely matters.

We invest in powerful professional cleaning equipment because heat, agitation and effective extraction can make an enormous difference to what can be achieved.

But equipment is only part of the equation.

Over the years, I've seen a misconception develop that if someone owns a carpet-cleaning machine, they're essentially providing the same service as every other carpet cleaner.

They're not.

Professional carpet cleaning involves understanding carpet fibres, cleaning chemistry, spotting techniques, appropriate agitation, temperature, extraction and moisture recovery.

And then there's experience: knowing when to change the process because the carpet in front of you isn't responding the way you expected.

The machine is a tool. The person using it still matters.

That's why professional training and continuing to improve our knowledge have always been important at Radius.

Customers Appreciate Honesty

This is probably one of the biggest lessons we've learned.

People don't necessarily expect miracles.

They want the truth.

Sometimes we look at a stain and believe we can remove it completely.

Sometimes we know we're likely to improve it but can't promise complete removal.

And occasionally we're looking at permanent fibre damage, bleaching or discolouration that cleaning simply cannot reverse.

We'd rather explain that before starting than promise something we can't deliver.

The same applies to additional treatments.

If we believe something will genuinely benefit the customer, we'll recommend it. If we don't think they need it, we'll tell them that too.

It's a pretty simple philosophy:

Treat people the way we'd want to be treated if someone were working in our home.

The Little Things Aren't Actually Little

When you read through hundreds of customer reviews, something interesting becomes apparent.

  • People certainly talk about how their carpets, tiles or upholstery turned out.

  • But they also talk about the experience.

  • Turning up when promised.

  • Communicating properly.

  • Taking care around furniture and someone's home.

  • Explaining what we're doing.

  • Spending extra time working on a difficult spot.

  • Being friendly.

  • Cleaning up properly when we're finished.

  • Not suddenly changing the price when we arrive.

These things may seem small individually, but together they determine whether someone finishes the experience thinking:

“I'm glad I chose these guys.”

That's the standard we're continually trying to achieve.

The Cheapest Quote Isn't Necessarily the Same Service for Less Money

This is something I think consumers deserve to understand about our industry.

Carpet-cleaning prices can vary considerably.

Naturally, it's tempting to compare two quotes and assume you're comparing exactly the same service at two different prices.

Often, you're not.

Training, experience, equipment, cleaning products, preparation, time spent in the home, stain treatment and attention to detail can all vary from one company to another.

Radius doesn't aim to be the cheapest carpet cleaner in Melbourne.

We aim to provide genuine value by doing the job properly, using professional equipment and cleaning products, giving honest advice and putting the time and effort into achieving the best result we reasonably can.

For many of our customers, that's ultimately more important than finding the lowest possible price.

500 Reviews Later, What Have We Learned?

Probably something fairly simple.

  • People still value businesses that answer the phone, turn up, communicate, know their trade, charge honestly and care about the work they leave behind.

  • Technology changes.

  • Equipment improves.

  • Cleaning products improve.

  • Google changes.

But those basic expectations haven't changed very much at all.

And I don't think they ever will.

To Our Customers: Thank You

If you've used Radius before, thank you.

If you've left us a Google review, recommended us to somebody, called us back for another job or simply trusted us to work in your home, you've played a part in helping a small Melbourne business reach this milestone.

We genuinely appreciate it.

And if you're reading this because you're on our email list but haven't used Radius yet, hopefully this gives you a better idea of who we are and how we approach our work.

We're proud of reaching 500+ Google reviews.

But we're considerably more interested in earning the next one.
